BLOG: Celebrating Black History!
By: Lydia Owusu-Afram
Black history month was originally created in 1915 by the historian Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland, who founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). They were dedicated to researching and celebrating the achievements of Black Americans and people of African descendent. Although originally celebrated in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In the UK, however it is celebrated in October as it is one of the longest months and symbolises the beginning if the academic year, this helps install pride and identification into black kids. It is a time for us all to acknowledge both the struggles and great achievements of black people. Looking at the greats like Martin Luther king and Maya Angelou, and those who fight for change in this modern day like Jesse Williams and the amazing creators of the #Blacklivesmatter movement. It is a time to reflect on the rich history, how far we have come and the many changes that are still to be made and most importantly celebrate people of colour.
Here at the University of Chichester the African Caribbean Society (ACS) and Black and Asian Minority Ethnic Student Advisory Group(BAMESAG) have come together to bring you a range of exciting events and activities for all students to get involved in.
Starting on the 11th at the Bishops Otter Campus (BOC) and the 13th on the Bognor Regis Campus(BRC), there will be a takeover, where we will be serving the best of African Caribbean cuisine.
On the 16th at the Zee Bar (BOC) is our 90s Fro-Back Party, come in your most colourful 90’s outfit and celebrate the best of 90’s to today’s black music, from R&B to Hip-Hop and everything in between.
Finally, to round off the month on the 20th and 21st, at the Goldsmiths University, London, there will be an exhibition showcasing black history on film and a conference discussing the lack of black history being taught in schools.
I hope you will be able to join us in celebrating this amazing month!
