By Lauren Ellis, UCSU President
The best part about this University how every student is equal and I am proud to lead a Students’ Union who strongly believe every student has the right to equal opportunities.
Being a female President with the University’s first female Vice-Chancellor has been an incredible year for leadership,
- LGBT Sports Charter
- Gender neutral toilets
- We have the opportunity to sit on all University meetings as the student representative of your student voice.
In my role as SU president I was enamoured and immensely proud to support and lead upon the universities contribution to This Girl Can week. A week which builds on a campaign launched in 2015 by Sport England to encourage more women to get active and participate in sport and physical exercise.
During the week we delivered a whole raft of free activities from Trampolining, to hockey to tennis and everything in between. We witnessed a great display from our netball club who managed to host a 17 team strong tournament in our sports Dome of both regular and new players.
The events across the week were not just aimed at getting regular athletes playing more sport, but also breaking down barriers and encouraging others to take up a new sport or activity and try something for the first time. I wanted all our girls and the community to embrace this week and the social media reposes we received via #SweatySelfieChallenge #ThisGirlCan #ChiGirlsCan epitomises beautifully what the week was about. The week was definitely a highlight and something I’ll always remember.
