Susan Pettett's Story: Why I chose to study Foundation Early Years!
Q: Why did you pick the BA Hons Early Childhood Top Up course?
A: This course allowed me to continue to top-up my foundation degree to a full BA degree and worked perfectly with my working and family life. I only needed to go into the University one day a week for much needed lectures and to check-in with the very supportive lecturers but could structure my study around my life.
Q: What does your current role involve?
A: My current role of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) at an Early Years setting means I am responsible for ensuring certain strategies and provision is in place for children who require additional support in their learning and enable them to access their environment easily. I also contact other specialists regarding the children’s needs and write up reports for funding and Educational Health Care Plans for ready for school. Additionally, I am a key-person and oversee my key-children are settled in the setting and learning journals up-to-date.
Q: How has the course helped you in your current role?
A: I feel I know the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) very well as key policies and legislations that contribute to the care I provide for the children in my setting. I am more confident in my role and feel I can build strong working partnerships with both parents and other professionals to ensure the best care for the children in my setting.
Q: What are your future ambitions?
A: I hope to strengthen in my role as a SENCo, becoming more confident and network with other settings and schools as well as professionals. With this I hope to become a manger of a small setting that can provide outstanding care and provision to all the children and their families.
Q: Which modules have you found particularly beneficial and why?
A: I found the Managers and Special Educational Needs modules useful in expanding my knowledge in these areas and with working alongside this course I could easily implement what I have learnt into practice to get a holistic experience of what I learnt.
Q: What would you say is the best feature of the course?
A: Being able to fit the study around my life and having very supportive lecturers who really helped me on my learning journey.
